The Honduras national football team have made three appearances at a FIFA world cup finals tournament. The Honduras national football team is made up of mainly home-based players. They over-achieved to make it to the last two world cups, but will always struggle with a lack of European based players. Wilson Palacios is perhaps the best known player in the Honduras camp.
After their exit from the 2010 world cup, the Honduras national football team underwent a large-scale change in personnel. A number of older players chose to retire and the country went through a few head coaches. They performed well in their Gold cup campaign shortly after, only being defeated by eventual winners Mexico in the semi-final.
