The Slovenia national football team played their first match in 1992 after they split from Yugoslavia. The country gained its independence in 1991 but had previously existed as a regional team which was not officially recognised by FIFA. Their first unofficial match was against France in 1921.
The side’s first official match ended 1-1 with Estonia in Tallinn. The Slovenia national football team recorded their biggest win in a 1999 match against Oman. A 7-0 win in Muscat. Their biggest defeat came three years later when the team lost 5-0 to France.
The Slovenia national football team have made it to two world cups to date. The first in 2002 and their last in 2010. This is a good record as the side first attempted to qualify for the 1998 competition, and have entered every one since.
Yugoslavia Era
The Yugoslavia national team were a strong world cup side between 1930 and 1962. During this time they made it to two semi-finals and two quarter-finals, but never reached the final. After 1962 the team only made it to a further three world cup tournaments which included a further quarter final appearance in 1990. For the 1994 world cup the side was banned from taking part due to UN sanctions.
