The Uruguay national football team have had a successful few years on the international stage. After a strong showing in the 2010 world cup in South Africa the side followed up by winning the 2011 Copa America. After a sixteen year wait to win the tournament they again hold the record for Copa America tournament victories, which may surprise some. Neither Brazil or Argentina can match the team’s fifteen wins.
As far as world cups are concerned, the side have won the competition twice. The first was the inaugural world cup on home soil in 1930. The second came twenty years later in 1950 when they beat the hosts Brazil in the final.
The success the Uruguay national football team have had over the years is put into perspective by the relative size of their population. They are far and away the lowest populated country to win a world cup at a little over three million inhabitants. The second lowest populated country to emerge victorious in a world cup is Argentina which has over forty million people living there.
