The Barbados national football team are nicknamed Bajan Pride. The team has not only never qualified for a world cup finals, they have also never qualified for any major international tournament, such as the Gold Cup.
Cricket is the country’s most popular sport. They hosted the 2007 cricket world cup. Many Barbadian players have played for the world famous West Indies cricket team. There is also a keen interest in athletics and the country has produced several Olympic sprinters. Polo and golf are available to the more more affluent whereas the popularity of basketball, netball and Motorsport is growing. With the country being surrounded by water, water-sports such as surfing and windsurfing are also popular.
The country itself is 21 miles long and 14 miles wide. It has an estimated population of 284,000 people. It is a member of the commonwealth and has the Queen as it’s head of state.
Barbados is situated on the boundary of the South American and Caribbean tectonic plates. Due to its location the country is susceptible to earthquakes. It is also threatened by hurricanes although not to the same extent as some if it’s Caribbean neighbours. One of the most famous people to come from Barbados in recent history is Rihanna. The award winning artist is not only an international star; she is also an ambassador of youth and culture for Barbados.
