The Belize national football team only began playing international football in 1995. They have never qualified for a World cup or a Gold cup. The team began playing in World cup qualifiers in 1998 and have entered all subsequent competitions.
Belize is situated on the north east coast of Central America. It has a population of a little over 300,000 people. To the north is a border with Mexico and to the west and south is a border with Guatemala. Off the east coast of Belize is the second-largest barrier reef in the world.
With Belize having a tropical climate it is highly susceptible to hurricanes. In the country’s history it has been forced to relocate its capital to try to limit damage done by these storms. The two most recent hurricanes were in 2007 and 2010.
Sport is very popular in Belize with football, basketball and cycling enjoyed. Volleyball, athletics, cricket and softball are also played. On the international stage it is Belize’s basketball which has arguably had the most success.
