The Curaçao national football team is the successor of the Netherlands Antilles, a country which no longer exists. As they are the direct successor they take on their footballing history and FIFA ranking. They are not actually an independent state however, and fall within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Curaçao is similar to Aruba and Bonaire in its geography. In terms of its climate, the coldest month in Curaçao is January which averages at around 26 degrees. It is outside the hurricane belt and has not experienced a landfall hurricane since records began. It has been hit by a few tropical storms in recent years however.
Sport in Curaçao primarily revolves around baseball, with one of their little league teams making a big impression on larger countries. In the adult form of the game Curacaoans turn out for the Netherlands national team. Football is not very popular in the country which is reflected by the Curaçao national football team’s performances on the international stage. The national team is not helped by their association with the Netherlands, as any players originating from Curaçao who show ability are taken by the superior outfit. The most recent example is Vernon Anita who is a Netherlands international.
