The Egypt national football team formed in 1921. The team affiliated to FIFA in 1923 and the Confederation of African Football in 1957. Egypt holds the record for the most consecutive undefeated Africa Cup of Nations games; nineteen in total.
Ranked 36th in the FIFA Rankings, the Egypt national football team is on the cusp of being a side expected to make the world cup finals.
World cup 1934
In 1934 Egypt became the first African team to appear at a world cup finals tournament. It was the second world cup and the first that required participants to qualify. As the tournament did not use a group stage, Egypt played only one match as they were beaten 4-2 by Hungary.
World cup 1990
The team did not qualify for another world cup for almost sixty years. When Egypt did qualify, the tournament was held in Italy as it had been in 1934. In the first round group stage, Egypt faced England, Ireland and the Netherlands. The group is famous for being the tightest in world cup finals history. Only one match was won in the entire group, when Egypt lost 1-0 to England. That result meant Egypt finished at the bottom of the group and were eliminated.
