The Fiji national football team first formed in 1938 but its current form dates back to 1961. The team joined FIFA in 1963 and the Oceania Football Confederation in 1966.
The team’s first official match came in 1951, a 6-4 loss to New Zealand. The same team holds the record for Fiji’s biggest defeat, a 13-0 hammering in 1981. Fiji’s biggest win is an astounding 24-0 against Kiribati from 1979.
Oceania’s Nations Cup has proved a happy hunting ground for the Fiji national football team. The team has qualified for the cup six times and reached the semi-finals on four occasions. In both 1998 and 2008 the team also won the third place play-off match.
The South Pacific Games have also been kind to Fiji. The team has won the competition twice, in 1991 and 2003. In addition, Fiji has finished in the top four teams on nine occasions.
Fiji has entered every world cup since the 1990 competition. The team is yet to qualify for the tournament proper.
