The Greece national football team have struggled to make an impression in the world cup. In 2004, however, they did surprise the world by winning the European championship. They beat a host of fancied teams along the way including France and Portugal in the final.
The team played their first international in 1929. It was not a successful start as they lost to Italy 4-1. The side’s biggest defeat came nine years later in 1938. It was an 11-1 humbling at the hands of Hungary. On a more positive note, the team’s record win came in 1949, when they defeated Syria 8-0.
Except for world cups in 1930 and 1950, the Greece national football team has attempted to qualify for every single world cup. Despite this the team has only featured at three finals tournaments to date.
