The Guatemala national football team have never qualified for a world cup finals tournament. They began attempting qualification in 1958 and have entered all qualifiers since, except for in 1966. The national stadium is in Guatemala city and is used for different sports, not just football. It has a capacity of 26,000.
The country itself is in Central America. It borders Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. It has a mix of geographical features with mountainous areas as well as small patches of desert. Situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Guatemala has often suffered with the threat of hurricanes. Many people have been affected and even killed in the resulting flooding and mudslides. As well as hurricanes it had a volcanic eruption in 2010.
The Guatemala national football team have never made it to a world cup finals competition unlike a few of their neighbours. This is not through a lack of trying. They have been on the cusp of qualification several times. The team have been all the way to the last round and penultimate round of qualifying, but have always missed out to the larger footballing nations in the section such as Mexico and the United States.
