The Mozambique national football team formed in 1976. The team joined the Confederation of African Football in 1978 and affiliated to FIFA in 1980. Despite years of success in the Africa Cup of Nations, Mozambique has never qualified for the world cup.
Mozambique’s first game was against Tanzania in 1977 and ended in a 2-1 defeat. A few years later, the team had improved to record a 6-1 win over Lesotho. The same year, Mozambique lost 6-0 to Zimbabwe, a record defeat that has stood for over three decades.
The 1980s and 1990s saw the Mozambique national football team find success in the Africa Cup of Nations. The team qualified for the 1986, 1996 and 1998 tournaments. In each edition, Mozambique won games and improved but did not pass the group stage. Mozambique did not qualify again until the 2010 tournament, where they once again failed at the first round group stage.
The team has never qualified for a world cup finals tournament, though it has had relatively few chances to. Mozambique first attempted to qualify for 1982 finals but was not able to try again until the 1994 tournament. The team has since entered all qualifying campaigns without success.
Ranked 118th by FIFA, the Mozambique national football team needs success at world cup level to climb any higher.
