One of the oldest teams in Asian football, the Philippines national football team has never qualified for a world cup or its local federation’s Asian Cup. The team formed in 1907 as an amateur outfit and later helped form the Asian Football Confederation.
The team has the unusual honour of holding two national record results against the same team. In 1917, the Philippines beat Japan 15-2. 50 years later, Japan gained revenge in a 15-0 victory.
The Philippines have a long and unimpressive history with the world cup. The team first tried to enter Brazil 1950 but withdrew. Entry was denied for England 1966 and the team withdrew again in 1974. 1998 saw a first entry, with no qualification success to date.
Despite a very strong history, the Philippines plummeted down the rankings after the millennium. The team ranked so poorly in the late 2010’s that they did not enter the 2010 world cup qualification process.
