The South Korea national football team formed in 1928. The team affiliated to FIFA in 1948 and joined the Asian Football Confederation in 1954. South Korea has played in nine world cups, more than any other Asian team and co-hosted the tournament with Japan in 2002.
Despite their impressive record in world cups the side have only won the AFC Asian Cup twice. These came as far back as 1956 and 1960. The team has finished as runners-up a further four times and in third place another four times.
