The Gibraltar national football team are one of the newest members of FIFA. For the first time they are eligible to qualify for the world cup in 2018. The team only recently become a member of UEFA and entered qualifying for Euro 2016.
Gibraltar has a population of around 30’000 people, which makes it one of the smallest UEFA members. Unofficially the Gibraltar national football team has been playing matches since the 1920’s. They have played club sides such as Sevilla in Spain, as well as teams from the Channel Islands over the years. Since 1993 the side has also competed in the Island Games.
The Gibraltar national football team’s first official match took place as recently as 2013. It was a 0-0 against Slovakia. The team’s official biggest win came in 2014, a 1-0 win over Malta.
In 2006 the side took place in the FIFI wild cup. The tournament was made up of sides that were not FIFA members, as well as disputed territories. The Gibraltar national football team finished third in a competition which was won by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
