The Montenegro national football team is one of the youngest in existence today. They came into being following the 2006 world cup. Before this they competed as a united Serbia and Montenegro, and were formerly part of Yugoslavia.
Yugoslavia reached semi-finals and quarter-finals in the world cup between 1930 and 1990. In 1994 they were banned and in 1998 FR Yugoslavia appeared. In 2006 Serbia and Montenegro lost all of their group games to finish bottom. This included a 6-0 loss to Argentina.
The Montenegro national football team played their first world cup qualifier in 2008. The game was a 2-2 draw with Bulgaria. A sign of how young the team is, their first international match was a 2-1 win over Hungary in 2007. Their biggest win is 6-0 over San Marino in 2012, and their biggest defeat came against Romania. 4-0 losses in 2008 and 2013.
