The Niue national football team represents the small Pacific Island of Niue. The team is not affiliated to FIFA so cannot enter the world cup. Niue is a member of the Oceania Football Confederation and can compete at the Nations Cup.
The Island of Niue lies in the Pacific Ocean. It is known locally as ‘The Rock’. Niue governs itself but is associated with New Zealand and all citizens of the island are citizens there too. As such, Queen Elizabeth II is Niue’s head of state. Only about 1,400 people live on Niue, many inhabitants move to New Zealand despite Niue’s free internet access.
The South Pacific Games have hosted both of Niue’s two games to date. In 1983 the team lost 19-0 to Papua New Guinea and 14-0 to Tahiti. Niue has not entered the competition since 1983.
Niue High School Oval serves as the team’s home stadium. It can hold 1,000 spectators and is used by both Alofi and Talava in the domestic league.
The Niue Island Soccer Association organises both the national team and the domestic Niue Soccer Tournament. Tavala is the most successful club in the top tier. The team has been champions on four occasions. Launched in 1985, the tournament ran for twenty seasons until 2005. No champions have been crowned since then.
