The Saint Kitts and Nevis national football team is affectionately known as The Sugar Boyz. Sugar was one of the main items produced on the island. They played their first ever match in 1979 and lost to Jamaica 2-1. The team have never qualified for a world cup finals but they only began attempting qualification in 1998. They have taken part in all subsequent tournaments.
The island of Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest in the Americas. That is in terms of both area and population. As the name suggests it is a two island nation, with the capital city on the larger island of Saint Kitts.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is a commonwealth country which has the Queen as its head of state. The country actually only gained independence in 1983. The referendum to split Saint Kitts and Nevis into two separate countries fell short, however, of the required support.
Sport is very popular in Saint Kitts and Nevis with the country providing players who take part in the West Indies cricket team. They have also produced a world and Olympic class athlete in sprinter Kim Collins.
