The Faroe Islands national football team became a member of FIFA in 1988. Two years later, in 1990, the team became a member of UEFA. The team has never made it to the finals of the world cup or European championships.
The team has actually been in existence since 1930. Although the country’s FA do not recognise any matches before 1988 as official. Their first competitive international was played against Austria. It proved to be a great start for the Faroe Islands national football team as they won 1-0. The game itself was played in Sweden because there were no grass pitches on the islands.
They have taken part in qualifying for world cups since 1992. For the 1994 finals they did not manage to win a single point. They conceded 38 goals and scored just one. Things have improved since then, but not significantly.
