The Union of European Football Associations has 55 teams. The Confederation is the most successful in world cup history, winning 11 of 20 tournaments. Europe has hosted the world cup more times than any other Confederation, holding 10 editions to date. In 2018 the world cup will return to European soil when Russia are hosts. Five different European nations have won the world cup, including current world champions Germany. The most successful teams in Europe are Italy and Germany, both with four titles. England, France and Spain have all won the world cup once. European qualifying is distinct from most other Confederations as it has only one round followed by a play-off. South America has a similar system, but with far fewer teams involved.
