The Asian Football Confederation consists of 47 teams, including one, the Northern Mariana Islands, that is not affiliated to FIFA. 46 teams compete for four automatic qualification places and one play-off spot. The play-off is against the fifth placed team from South American Football Confederation qualifying. No Asian team has won the world cup, but Japan and South Korea did host the first Asia based competition in 2002, with the latter reaching the semi-final.
