The Iceland national football team have never made it to the finals of the world cup. The team has enjoyed an upturn in fortunes since a strong performance in Euro 2004 qualification, and recently qualified for Euro 2016.
The side’s first official international came in 1946, a 3-0 loss to Denmark. Their biggest defeat came against the same side. A 14-2 hammering in 1967. The Iceland national football team have consistently attempted qualification for the world cup since 1974.
The closest the team has come to making it to a world cup came as recently as 2014. After finishing second in their qualifying group to Switzerland, the side went into a play-off against Croatia. After a 0-0 draw at home, the Iceland national football team succumbed to a 2-0 defeat in Zagreb.
