Founded in 1959, the Mongolia national football team didn’t play an international match between 1960 and 1998. Their record since 1998 is poor. They are one of the few FIFA teams to lose to Guam, alongside the likes of American Samoa.
Mongolia have played very few games since 1998. They have only ever beaten a very small number of opponents. The team has entered several cup competitions but has never qualified for a tournament.
The state of Mongolia in sandwiched between Russia to the north and China on every other side. The country is most famous for Genghis Khan, who led the Mongol Empire. At one point the Empire stretched from eastern Europe to the Sea of Japan.
Modern Mongolia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. It is also one of the largest countries without a coastal border. Traditional sports are popular in Mongolia. These include horse riding, archery and wrestling. Football became more popular after the national team began playing in the late 1990’s. A domestic league began in 1976 and features seven teams.
Mongolia have entered world cup qualification for every tournament since 2002 but have yet to progress beyond the early stages.
