Norway national football team

The Norway national football team has made it to three world cups and one European championship. In a strange quirk Norway are the only team never to have lost a match against Brazil. Their record stands at two wins and two draws, including a win during the 1998 world cup.

In comparison to their Scandinavian neighbours Norway have a weaker record on the international stage. Their first international was against Sweden in 1908. It was a difficult start as the side lost 11-3. This wasn’t their biggest loss however. This dates back to 1917, a 12-0 loss to Denmark. Norway’s biggest win was also by 12 goals to nil. This came against Finland in 1946.

France

The 1938 world cup was held in France and won by defending champions Italy. In a straight knock-out format the Norway national football team couldn’t have asked for a more difficult opening game. Against defending champions and eventual winners Italy the team took the game to extra time. A 1-1 draw after 90 minutes eventually ended in a 2-1 defeat and elimination.

1994

United States

In 1994 the world cup was hosted by the United States and won by Brazil. The Norway national football team were involved in one of the tightest groups in world cup history. After beating Mexico, the side lost to Italy and drew with the Republic of Ireland. All four teams ended with one win, one loss and one draw. Norway finished bottom of the group thanks to their inability to score goals.

1998

France

France hosted the world cup in 1998, and they also went on to win the tournament for the first time. The competition represented an important step for the Norway national football team. After draws with Morocco and Scotland, a win against Brazil put them into second place and through to the next round for the first time – 83rd and 88th minute goals turned the game from a 1-0 deficit to a 2-1 win. In the last 16 the side came up against old rivals Italy. A 1-0 loss put them out.
