The Ukraine national football team have made it to one world cup as an independent nation. Up until 1990 the team had competed as part of the Soviet Union. Ukraine played their first ever match in 1992 against Hungary. Things didn’t begin well for the side as they lost 3-1. The side’s biggest win came as recently as 2013, a 9-0 win over San Marino.
The team first began attempting to qualify for world cups in 1998. In 1994 the side had failed to gain FIFA recognition in time to enter the tournament. It took until 2006 for the Ukraine national football team to qualify, and they have been unable to repeat the achievement since. Things have been just as barren in the European Championships. Since 1996 the team have only qualified for one tournament and that was as hosts in 2012.
