The Kenya national football team first played in 1926. Kenyan football has a turbulent history of changes to its governing body. The Kenyan Football Federation formed in 1960 and joined FIFA the same year. In 1968 the federation joined the Confederation of African Football. In 2006, FIFA suspended the federation after disputes with rival body Football Kenya Limited. After a brief truce hostilities resumed and FIFA decided in favour of Football Kenya Limited.
Football Kenya Limited was recognised as Kenya’s sole governing body in 2008. In 2011, the organisation disbanded to stop being a limited company. Football Kenya Federation then took charge of Kenyan football, with the same make-up as Football Kenya Limited. Football Kenya Federation was recognised by the African confederation and FIFA in 2012.
Kenya has entered every world cup qualification campaign since 1974. The team has never qualified for a finals event. Kenya has performed better in the Africa Cup of Nations, reaching the first round five times but not since 2004.
Ranked 108th by FIFA, the Kenya national football team need to improve on recent years if they hope to join the top one-hundred teams in the world.
