The Reunion national football team is not a member of FIFA. The team is an associate member of the Confederation of African Football. Despite these setbacks, the team plays a healthy amount of games against its close neighbours and rivals.
Reunion’s population is around 800,000. The island lies in the Indian Ocean off the East coast of Africa. Its closest island neighbour is Mauritius, with whom it shares a strong sporting rivalry. As an overseas department of France, Reunion is an outlying region of the European Union and member of the Eurozone.
Reunion’s home stadium is a 7,500 capacity multi-use ground in Saint-Denis known as Stade Jean-Ivoula.
As it is not a member of FIFA, and never has been, Reunion has no world cup record to speak of. As an associate member of its regional confederation it is not eligible to enter the African Cup of Nations either.
It has, however, had great success in the Indian Ocean games. Reunion won the regional tournament in 1979, 1998 and as recently as 2007. In addition, the team in 2008 also won The Overseas Cup.
The Reunion national football team makes the most of its regional competitions.
