Germany national football team

The Germany national football team are one of the most successful teams in world football. They have been to every FIFA world cup they have been permitted to enter. The only other team to do this is Brazil.

The side played their first ever match in 1908. They played Switzerland and lost the game 5-3. The Germany national football team played right through until 1942, when matches were suspended because of the Second World War.

After the war the team were banned from competing in most sports until 1950. The country was divided in three: East Germany, West Germany and Saarland.

Pre-reunification years

West Germany announced themselves by winning the tournament in 1954. They followed this up with fourth place in 1958 and a quarter-final in 1962. West Germany returned to the final in 1966, where they lost 4-2 to hosts England.

In 1974 the team claimed their second world title. They were joined in their home tournament by East Germany. Although West Germany did come out on top in the end, East Germany actually beat their neighbours 1-0.

The side lost in the final in both 1982 and 1986. In their final tournament before reunification, West Germany managed to turn runners-up into winners in 1990.

1934

Italy

After not entering the 1930 world cup due to financial restrictions the Germany national football team took their world cup bow in 1934. The tournament was hosted by Italy, and won by them as well. In a straight knock-out format Germany beat fellow Europeans Belgium and Sweden to move into the semi-final.  Here the side came unstuck against Czechoslovakia, losing 3-1. The team did manage to beat Austria 3-2 in the 3rd place play-off.

1938

France

The 1938 world cup was held in France and was once again won by Italy. After finishing 3rd in the last edition the Germany national football team would have been expecting to make the final this time around. It was not to be as the side exited in the first round after losing on penalties to Switzerland.

1994

United States

The Germany national football team returned as a single entity after the fall of the Berlin wall. Hosted by the United States, the tournament in 1994 was won by Brazil. Germany topped their group after two wins and a draw against Spain. In the last 16 the team defeated Belgium 3-2, but came unstuck in the quarter final. Despite leading the game, two late goals saw them suffer a 2-1 loss to Bulgaria, and exit the tournament.

1998

France

The tournament in 1998 returned to Europe, and was hosted and won by France. As in 1994 the Germany national football team again topped their group with two wins and a draw, this time against Yugoslavia. After squeezing past Mexico in the last 16 the side went on to face Croatia. Again, as in 1994, the side failed in the quarter final, after a heavy 3-0 defeat.

2002

Japan and South Korea

For the first time ever the world cup went to Asia in 2002. Hosted by Japan and South Korea, the tournament was won by Brazil for a fifth time. The Germany national football team stuck to their two wins and a draw policy to top their group. This included a 8-0 win over Saudi Arabia. Three successive 1-0 wins followed, against Paraguay, United States and South Korea, to put the team into their first final since 1990 as West Germany. It wasn’t to be as two goals from Ronaldo saw Brazil to the title.

2006

Germany

The Germany national football team hosted the 2006 world cup but could not go all the way and win it. It was Italy who claimed their fourth title, beating France in the final. Germany cruised through their group, with three wins from three games, scoring eight goals along the way. This form continued in the last 16 against Sweden, where the side recorded a 2-0 win to progress. Things were much tighter in the quarter final against Argentina. After an 80th minute equaliser for Germany, the game went to penalties. Four perfect penalties saw the side progress at the South American’s expense. The game again went as far as extra time in the semi final. Eventually things proved too much for Germany, as they lost 2-0 to Italy. The side beat Portugal in the third place play-off.

2010

South Africa

In 2010 the world cup visited Africa for the first time. South Africa were the hosts of a tournament which was eventually won by Spain. The Germany national football team had a shaky group stage, but still managed to finish top of their group. This led them to a last 16 fixture against old rivals England. A thumping 4-1 win convincingly saw the side through to the quarter finals. As it was in 2006, the side met Argentina. This time it wasn’t quite as tight, as Germany scored another four goals to cruise into the semi final. Again the Germany national football team lost out to the eventual winners. A 1-0 loss to Spain saw them thrown into the third place play-off, where they beat Uruguay 3-2.

2014

Brazil

The tournament in 2014 was hosted by Brazil. The Germany national football team made history by becoming the first European side to win the world cup in South America, claiming their fourth title in the process. The team started with intent, as they cruised past a disjointed Portugal 4-0. A tough 2-2 draw with Ghana followed, with a final match 1-0 win over the United States giving them top spot in the group.

In the last 16 the side arguably had their toughest game in the tournament. The side faced an Algeria team making their own history by being in the knock-out phase. An exciting end-to-end game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes. Three goals in extra-time finally gave Germany a 2-1 win. In the quarter-final a tight 1-0 win over France was enough, which set up a semi-final clash with Brazil. In what was anticipated as the game of the tournament, after 30 minutes the match was effectively over. The Germany national football team were 5-0 up in 29 minutes, with Brazil imploding in-front of a packed home crowd. The game eventually finished 7-1. The final was against another South American side Argentina. The game was tight, and in truth Argentina may have edged it. 0-0 after 90 minutes the game was won by a German goal in the 113th minute of extra-time.
