The Kosovo national football team are the newest members of both UEFA and FIFA. They were accepted to FIFA as recently as May 2016. They will now enter their first world cup qualifying for Russia 2018.
The side actually formed after the breakup of Yugoslavia and played their first unofficial match against Albania in 1993. The Kosovo national football team’s biggest defeat came in another unofficial match as recently as 2014. The team lost at home to Turkey 6-1.
The Kosovo national football team actually applied to join FIFA back in 2008 but were rejected. In 2012 a petition by a series of Switzerland and Albanian international footballers with Kosovan origins eventually resulted in FIFA allowing the side to play international friendlies in 2014.
