Founded in 1951, the Laos national football team has spent half a century at the tail end of football rankings. Recent years have seen a slight progression, though this might be down to more luck than skill.
Laos have a poor record in world cups, not attempting to qualify for one until the 2002 competition.
Laos did make the second round of world cup qualifying in 2006, albeit by default. When both Guam and Nepal withdrew, the team advanced to the next round despite defeat in the first. Despite this helping hand the team progressed no further, losing all of their second round games.
The team’s only appearances at competitive tournaments have been at small regional events. Laos have won games at both the South East Asian Games and the Tiger Cup.
