The Lithuania national football team played their first international match in 1923. Things didn’t start well for the side as they lost 5-0 to Estonia. In 1940 the country was occupied by the Soviet Union, and only regained independence in 1990.
In 1995 the team managed to get their revenge for the Estonia defeat. The 7-0 win remains the side’s biggest victory to date.
Although the Lithuania national football team have never made it to a world cup or a European championship, they have managed some notable results along the way, and registered some respectable finishes in their groups. The team has managed draws with Germany and Italy, and beaten Romania and Austria.
If the team continue to be competitive in qualifiers they will soon move into the top 100 team in the world.
