Liechtenstein national football team

The Liechtenstein national football team have never qualified for a world cup or European championship. They have had mixed results in world cup qualifying along the way. During 1998 world cup qualifying the team lost 11-1 to Macedonia. Their biggest defeat to date. In a 2006 world cup qualifier the side achieved their biggest win, a 4-0 win over Luxembourg.

Generally world cup qualifying for the side has been difficult. The Liechtenstein national football team’s record was so bad it inspired writer Charlie Connelly to create Stamping Grounds. The book follows the side through each game in the 2002 world cup qualifying campaign, and looks closely at the country, the people, and their football.

The team are relatively recent FIFA members, and first took part in any qualifying campaign for Euro 1996. The county’s relatively tiny population leaves them little hope of ever making it to a world cup, but that doesn’t stop them trying.
