Founded in 1973, the Montserrat national football team became affiliated with FIFA in 1996. They are one of the newest teams to international football having only played their first competitive match in 1991.
Montserrat’s last competitive win was in 1995 over Anguilla, so as you can imagine their world cup qualifying campaigns to date (2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014) have not gone well. They would have also entered the 1998 world cup qualifiers if it wasn’t for a sizeable volcanic activity.
After failing in their first campaign Montserrat decided to play a game against Bhutan on the day of the world cup final. The match was dubbed ‘The Other Final‘ and was between the lowest ranked teams in the world at the time. They lost the game 4-0, firmly placing them as bottom of the pile. 25,000 people turned out to watch the game.
During the 2006 qualifying campaign they suffered the largest defeat in their short history, losing 13-0 in an away first leg match in Bermuda. They went on the lose 20-0 on aggregate.
