Canada national football team

The Canada national football team have a long history in FIFA world cup qualifying, although they have only ever made it to a final tournament once. Canada is a country both divided and united. It has the Queen as its head of state and is a bi-lingual nation. It has both French and English as its official language. In terms of its total area Canada is actually the second biggest country in the world, behind only Russia. It has borders with the United States to the south and the state of Alaska to the north.

The national sports of Canada are Ice Hockey and Lacrosse. The former is possibly what Canada is known internationally for as they have competed at a high level in the Olympics as well as having several National Hockey League teams. Curling is also popular, as well as American influenced sports such as baseball and basketball. Football is a popular spectator sport but that of course is referring to American football. Soccer, as football is known in Canada, has a pretty low reputation in the country with many of their better players playing overseas, some having made it to the Premier League in England.

Mexico

In 1986 the Canada national football team made it to their only world cup finals tournament to date. The tournament was held in Mexico where they were drawn alongside France, the USSR and Hungary. Although performing well in their opening game they were still defeated 1-0, courtesy of a late winner for France. In the end the side went on to lose all three games and finish bottom of the group. They conceded five goals in total and did not manage to score a single goal.

2018

Russia

The Canada national football team entered world cup qualifying in the second round. It was a comfortable start for the side as they beat Dominica 6-0 on aggregate. The third round didn’t present a challenge for the side either. A 3-0 win in the first leg against Belize was followed by a 1-1 draw and the side moved on to the fourth round group stage against Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.
