Latvia national football team

Latvia national football team

The Latvia national football team have never qualified for a world cup. The side has however made it to the finals of the European championships. This came in Portugal in 2004.

The side played their first ever international match in 1922. A 1-1 draw with Estonia. In 1938 the team took part in qualifying for the world cup. The team finished second in their group, and although group winners Austria withdrew, were not invited to participate.

In 1940 the country was annexed by the Soviet Union. This meant that the Latvia national football team did not enter another world cup qualification until the world cup in 1994. This was after the country regained it’s independence in 1991.
